"Live in the dash"
My high school orchestra teacher used to say, “Live in the dash.”
She would step up to the chalkboard with a piece of chalk, write a year (was it 1979?) draw a dash follow by a blank space.
“The dash falls between your birth and death dates,” she said. Then she’d look at us and laugh. We’d laugh too. She had all these lessons.
